The route itself is 12km long so you will need a good level of fitness and walking boots as the terrain can be uneven, steep and sometimes muddy.
The effort however is worth it. Even on cold winter days, the views are breathtaking. Towards the end of the walk, just outside Bala the route takes you past the Bala Lake Hotel which has a lovely terrace with views across the lake where you can enjoy a well-deserved “panad” and piece of cake.
Rather than retrace your steps, you can either catch the train back to Llanuwchllyn on the Bala Lake railway or head into Bala town centre and catch the T3 bus.

Llyn Tegid is Wales’ largest natural lake. With a length of 3.5 miles and stunning views around the lake, many visitors to the area embark on a walk around the lake only to find that this is not such an easy task. The lake is bordered on one side by the A494 and the safe walking path disappears at the end of the lake resulting in a walk on the busy road for a section between the Glanllyn camp site and Llanuwchllyn.
A much better option, which also provides great views of the lake and the Aran and Arenig mountains is to head into the hills above the lake.
The route that is the easier to navigate is the path that runs between Llanuwchllyn and Bala on the south side of Llyn Tegid providing views of the lake below and the steam trains running along the lake shore. This route also forms part of the Mary Jones Walk and the Cross Britain Way so is well marked.
