Eryri’s Secret Mountain

Many visitors to Eryri (Snowdonia) have their sights on climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in the Northern part of the National Park and completely ignore the stunning mountain on Bala’s doorstep – Aran Fawddwy.
It is the only peak in Wales outside North Snowdonia above 900m and offers a perfect escape from the crowds that descend on Llanberis during the weekends and holidays.
The starting point for the ascent is through a metal gate by the bridge opposite the small National Park car park in Llanuwchllyn. Parking is also free here! The way to the route up the mountain is signposted from the narrow lane.
As with all mountains, you need to be prepared with a map that you know how to use and the right equipment. However, if you are a confident walker and the weather is kind, you will be rewarded with some amazing views of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) and beyond on your walk.
For those who don’t fancy the ridge walk all the way to the top, you can limit your walk to the first peak Aran Benllyn at 885 m. A pleasant short walk is the hike up to the first hill you reach on the climb – Garth Fach where you will still be rewarded with views over Llyn Tegid and the Arenig mountains in the distance.
